The beaches of los Caños de Meca are an example of the natural beauty and peace of Cadiz’ coastline, which for the moment has been spared from massive speculation and construction.
The atmosphere is very relaxed: mostly small groups of young people, a few families. Los Caños is not very big, but in summer there are (beach)bars and restaurants, where you can have a drink, dinner, or go dancing. You can also simply enjoy a lovely evening stroll.
From el Faro de Trafalgar lighthouse to the south, up to the village of los Caños itself, there is a variety of beaches to choose from. Most of them are nice and smooth, but at the far end of Los Caños the environment gets rougher, with cliffs and large rocks on the seashore.
In addition to the beautiful environment, crossing the sometimes difficult “rocky” part, the beach offers another incentive. At the far end you find the authentic “Caños”, small falls of sweet falling from the cliffs. This is where los Caños de Meca gets it’s name from. This sweet water is the groundwater dropping from the cliffs that may reach up to 100 meters above the level of the sea.
On top of the cliffs you find a small pine tree forest which is easy to reach from los Caños de Meca, starting right at the end of the town (to the south).
Just outside the main “agglommeration” of Los Caños de Meca to the north, towards Conil de la Frontera, you pass the Faro de Trafalgar lighthouse, marking Cape Trafalgar.
Right in front of the lighthouse the important Battle of Trafalgar took place in which the Royal Navy, led by Admiral Nelson, destroyed Napoleon’s combined Spanish and French fleet in 1805. The famous Trafalgar Square in London is named after this historic event.
