It covers an area of some 78.5 km2, with 31 settlements and more than 15,000 inhabitants. The economic and geographical diversity of the area encompasses villages and industrial settlements, hills and plains. The heart of the municipality is Medvode, an urban settlement at the confluence of the Sava and Sora rivers where the Sorško polje plain meets the Ljubljana basin. Medvode is situated 12 km northwest of Ljubljana along the main Ljubljana-Kranj road at an altitude of 316 m. The town is located at the junction of roads leading to Ljubljana, Kranj, Škofja Loka, Vodice and the Brnik airport, which is only 12 km away.
